The Young@Heart Café runs every Wednesday from 2pm to 4pm and is an opportunity to offer companionship to our community.

Our facilitators Maria Collins (Home Instead Senior Care) Teela Hughes (Music 24) and Christine Boyd (Holy Family and St John's) are hugely supported by a team of volunteers who help make the Café run smoothly and provide a welcoming cup of tea and homemade cakes each week. The Café focuses on providing companionship to a wide range of people who may be lonely, experiencing memory loss or at any stage of dementia.

Activities include singing, poetry, dancing, arts and crafts and games – all adapted so that social inclusion is the key priority.

There is no charge but a voluntary donation box is available each week.

On the 2nd week of each month, we have a dementia support worker attending who is available to have a conversation with anyone concerned about all aspects of dementia, or how to access support and advice. There is a rolling programme of other specialist support and activities planned for the Café guests, to ensure the programme continues with a wide appeal to many.

The Café started in September 2016 and at present has about 44 guests attending each week. Family members or paid carers are welcome to attend with an individual.

On December 14th 2016, we celebrated our first three months, with a Christmas Vintage Tea Party, when we came together with similar groups in the community to enjoy music, carols, poetry and plenty of home-made cakes and food – over 100 guests attended and a good time was had by all. The afternoon was made even more special by two visitors, Father Christmas who gave everyone a gift and Bishop Peter who circulated to speak to so many people and give his endorsement to this new initiative.

We would love to welcome more guests, who could benefit from the social interaction and fun provided - so if you know of anyone who would like to join us, please note our contact details below.
